The definition of a professional Virtual Assistant is that of one being an independent entrepreneur who provides administrative, technical and/or creative services within their area of expertise. A Virtual Assistant will utilize various technological assets to communicate and assist with his/her clients remotely from their own (home) office. They work on an on-going contract basis based on the needs of each client. To become a successful Virtual Assistant, he/she is expected to have a background of at least five years administrative experience obtained within a non-virtual office within higher-level capacities - including but not limited to administrative assistant, executive assistant, paralegal, real estate assistant and office manager. Having gained this type of experience, a Virtual Assistant should, therefore, possess the skills and business knowledge to move forward in their entrepreneurial endeavors. Since the timing of when Virtual Assistant’s first became officially known and recognized in the business world has not been recorded, it is unclear as to when the first Virtual Assistant took the stage; it was not long ago though - sometime between 1995 and 1997. It is documented, however, that most Virtual Assistants are U.S. residents, with Canada, England and Australia not far behind. It is estimated that there are only about 1,000 Virtual Assistants worldwide, but the numbers are growing substantially with each year that passes by. I, personally, began my Virtual Assistant business in 2001, however, I did not know that was what I was until I happened upon a networking website that described what I was doing as specifically that in 2003! |
