Are You Trying To Sell A One Room House?

Listen Carefully!

Someone I deeply respect and admire (and quite possibly just as importantly, understands my english dry sense of humor) caused me to experience a paradigm shift today.

He brought to my attention a blog post he wrote earlier this year about Streams.  No not the gently flowing kind you find outdoors, but the streams that we all take part in online – streams that at one time were considered simple spokes to the almighty hub.

The Spokes are now the Hub

The problem with the almighty hub scenario is this:

Envision an apple that had just a core.  Or, better yet, a house with a single room and no other rooms to make it a home.   Where’s the substance in that?

one room house for saleTo concentrate solely on gaining a following, a growing sphere, a lead generation via just its hub or core is not only wrong, but foolish.

There are dozens, if not hundreds, of opportunities to procure relationships and leads through the streams – and it is through those streams that make up the true hub of your online presence.  To treat these streams as just a means to the core is truly the wrong approach.

Matthew Shadbolt, Director of Interactive Product & Marketing with The Corcoran Group, is a shining example of exactly how your streams should be nurtured.  I encourage you to not only follow Matthew but see how he has grown each of his streams into full fledged flowing rivers, each producing their own source of real relationships and, ultimately, real business.

In fact, Matthew has done his job so well with all of his streams, that I do not even know the name of his “hub” or if he even has one.

That’s because his streams ARE his hub.

I am, therefore, inviting you to join me in taking a real hard look at your online presence today.  Ask yourself:

Am I treating my streams like spokes are are each of them an equally important part of my overall hub“?

Am I taking the time to nurture each of my streams or are they running dry“?

Am I relying solely on my “hub” to build relationships or am I building out my online presence with each of my streams“?

The way in which we conduct our business(es) today is different than yesterday, just as it will be different tomorrow.  Today we need to nurture our streams – Twitter, Facebook profiles, pages, groups, LinkedIN, Youtube, Pinterest, etc., – and not just use them as a means to an end.  They are SO much more than that.  They are the vines bearing the fruit!*

facebook isn't just a stream it is a vine bearing the fruit!

So how exactly do you nurture streams?

1.  Don’t treat them as just a course of action.

2.  Be deliberate in all that you do.

3.  Make yourself known just as much on Facebook,  Twitter, LinkedIN, Google+, Pinterest, as you do in your blog.

4.   Avoid the “auto-post” wherever possible (if you tweet something on Twitter, don’t use hashtags if you’re going to auto-post to LinkedIN, for example – that’s a HUGE turn off!)

5.  Be consistent

6.  Be real

be real

This is yet another reason why you should not only follow, but fully and intentionally examine what Matthew Shadbolt, says and does on a daily basis.

Thank you, Matthew, for making me (and hopefully others) look at the entire apple and not just it’s core.

Is Tech Savvy Agent Dead Without Chris Smith?

is Tech Savvy Agent dead?Last week the news hit the stands that Chris Smith, Co-Founder, of Tech Savvy Agent was jumping ship and taking on a hot new job with Inman next week.  Since then there has been quite the social buzz about what that means to the raving fans of Tech Savvy Agent that have been following us since we began back in October 2009.

Will Tech Savvy Agent cease to exist?

Who will be the next Tech Savvy Agent?

Who the heck is Steve Pacinelli and Suzanne Roy?!

These and other questions have been answered by Chris Smith himself, along with Max Pigman, National Speaker/Technologist and VP of Move, Inc.,

How can StumbleUpon Overtake Facebook?

I just saw a Facebook update by one of my idols, Gary Vaynerchuk, where he retweeted (God I love social media!) “OMG is this Real? RT: @gmc StumbleUpon just surpassed Facebook as the #1 source of social media traffic in the US!”

StumbleUpon overtakes Facebook

How can this be!? Is this a case of the long shot coming up from behind and obliterating the expected winner? No, I don’t think so, but what does it mean?

What I get from this is that we should be keeping a close eye on other ways to generate traffic to our blogs and not just keep tabs on the front runner.

It also gives me a great opportunity to remind you to use the top bookmarking sites to add links of your new blog posts on – obviously including StumbleUpon!

The other bookmarking sites I use for every blog post I write are Reddit, Yahoo Buzz and Digg (yes, I still do use Digg, but for how much longer…?). Here’s a snapshot from one of my client’s WordPress site statistics which shows the referring sites and number of visitors for each one:

top bookmarking sites

You’ll see both in the above live example and below in the Stats Graph Reddit is also a highly trafficked site that you may not have even heard of, but can definitely add to your online viewers and, ultimately, leads.

Digg versus Reddit - Social Bookmarking

It’s easy to start using bookmarking sites and to add a link for each new post you write is well worth the time and effort (which, by the way, is minimal). Simply go to www.StumbleUpon.com, www.Reddit.com, buzz.yahoo.com and www.Digg.com and sign up for a new profile and start making a habit of adding a link each time you write a new post.

Big Sale On A Must Have Facebook Lead Generation Tool

A must have Facebook lead generation tool just got a whole lot better!

I’ve been using Jotforms for about 6 months or so now and have received some great results from it. Using it’s lead form generation tool is a snap for any platform, whether its your website, blog site or Facebook business page. It’s a very simple online system where you can design your own lead form – from simple to completely branded – all for the same price. What’s that price? FREE!

So here’s where the even better news comes in. Until the end of December (2010), Jotform is offering 50% off their premium plan.

Jotform Sale

Here’s the great thing about this -you get ten times the submissions per month plus a whole lot more space for uploading your files for inclusion in branding your forms to make them look professional. I’m recommending this upgrade because the worst thing you could do is have a lead generation form on your Facebook business page and not have the capacity to have people give you their information!

So you may be thinking, will I ever get more than a hundred people filling out my lead generation form on my Facebook business page? Well, that’s the goal, right?! Just so you can envision the potential of the lead generation forms on Facebook, I had a form set up last month where I was offering something to potential clients and got over 60 people to complete the form in A DAY!

By the way, I am NOT an affiliate of Jotforms, so I am not making anything from this promotion of their lead generation tool, I just find their online service easy to use and one that I would recommend. We’re keeping our eye out for you!

If you use this lead generation tool for your Facebook business page (or blog, etc.,), let us know – add a comment below with a link to your form so we can check it out too!
